Whether you want to try a new color on your house, or your current paint job is wearing out, here are some things to consider.
Color
Color can make a huge difference to a house’s appearance, so make sure you consider everything before making a decision.
Are you planning on moving at some point?
If you are, choosing a more neutral color is a good idea. Bright blue houses tend to not do as well on the housing market. That doesn’t mean you can only paint your house white, gray, or beige, but it does mean that you should probably not be too extreme. The majority of people are attracted to white houses; however, that doesn’t mean that you can’t be a little more adventurous in your house’s trim color.
Have you considered how big your house is?
After all, a house is a big object. That bright orange might look good on your bike or even your car, but it might be a bit much on your house. If you’re really concerned about what a certain color will look like when it’s covering your house’s entire exterior, try using a photo editor to get an idea of what your house would look like.
Have you considered the surrounding houses?
A good rule of thumb is to look at the other houses in your neighborhood. If everyone has a splash of color on their house, you can do the same and not worry about standing out in a negative way. If everyone’s houses look exactly the same, you may want yours to stand out, but you should do it in a subtle way so that your house doesn’t look like it doesn’t fit with the rest of the neighborhood. If you have HOA fees, make sure you check the guidelines before painting, too.
DIY or Hire a Pro?
Once you’ve picked a color, it is time to paint. It seems like everyone wants to save money by doing home remodeling projects themselves, which can be a great option. However, sometimes you’re better off hiring a professional. How do you know which is the best choice for you?
If you are a novice to painting, you should hire a pro.
Painting a house is not nearly as easy as it looks. To get a nice, even coat of paint all over the house can be difficult, especially if you are painting over a different color. Nothing looks worse than a house with a streaky paint job. Keep in mind that even though a professional painter might be expensive, so is paint. And if you try to do it yourself and mess up, you’ll have to hire a professional anyway, and buy new paint.
If you have a huge house, hire a pro.
The bigger your house is, the longer it’s going to take to paint. Even if you’ve done some painting, you might be biting off more than you can chew. Before deciding to tackle the project yourself, get an estimate from a professional painter as to how long it would take them to complete the project. Double that estimate, at least, and that’s probably how long it will take you. Then you can decide if you’re really willing to dedicate that much time and labor to save some money.
